description

An exploration of colours and abstract illustrations in storytelling, through a collection of zines depicting how my parents fell in love with each other.

The Story of Us is a collection of six zines following the inner thoughts and feelings of my parents as they fall in love with each other during their university days. The story begins on orientation day, where they first saw each other. The Story of Us is by no means an epic love drama. Instead, it is an artistic portrayal of the messy yet beautiful rollercoaster of emotions when people fall in love.

The Story of Us consists of two corresponding zine series, one of my mum’s perspective and one of my dad’s perspective. I divided up my parents’ story into three parts:

1. Meet depicts how they first met and started to get to know each other.

2. Rupture recounts a misunderstanding between my parents.

3. Us shows how they overcame that misunderstanding and realisation of their mutual affection.

evocative colours and illustrations

One of the primary focus of this project is the use of colours and abstract illustrations to construct visual narratives and express the array of emotions that are felt in the process of falling in love.

parallels

Parallels can be found everywhere throughout this project. From the exterior, not only do that zine shapes correspond to the storyline, the covers have increasing saturation of colours that parallels the emotional intensity as the story progresses. Within a pair of zines, the text and graphics on the spreads of one zine parallel that of the other zine, which can be seen when the pair of zines are put together side by side. This allows readers to experience both parents’ perspectives simultaneously.

form follows function

As the famous phrase states, “form follows function”, the shapes of my zines corresponds to each part of the story. For example, the zines in Rupture have zig-zag edges, a visual interpretation of my parents rocky relationship when a misunderstanding causes a conflict between them.
